in 2008 we were at war, and barack obama and john mccain fought it out every day in that war. this week when the financial crisis was absolutely on fire, at that debate, they were talking about the wars. this year, president obama does bring it up, he does bring it up at most of his stump speeches, how he explains what he has done and planning on doing talking about the two wars. he doesn't have to say much more because he's speaking to an empty room. the romney campaign has no identifiable position on afghanistan. they have been unwilling and unable to hold up that side of debate and so regardless of what it means for the candidates as a country we are deprived of a national discussion about a war we are in. 70,000 american families having skin in the game right now. we have -- that's part of the reason i'm looking forward to the debates. some ways sort of a post-policy campaign. and you can't do that in a debate, at least unless the debate is really bad. >> this is -- this is billed as a domestic policy debate, but -- and there are so many ways this is also domestic policy,

look, that's a great place for president obama to be. remember, he doesn't need ohio to get to 270 electoral votes. it's hard to see, there are ways, but it's hard to see how mitt romney gets to 270 electoral votes without ohio. >> a dispute bubbling up over something that the president said on "60 minutes" with scott pelley describing what happened with the protests in libya as a bump in the road. >> right. >> mitt romney had a conversation with peter alexander on the road today and this was his pushback about it. >> the president characterized as bumps in the road, the developments in the middle east. we've just had an ambassador assassinated. egypt has elected a muslim brotherhood person as president. iran is on the cusp of having a nuclear capability. we have tumult in syria and pakistan. i don't consider these bumps in the road. i think this is a time for american leadership. >> and jay carney at the white house now responding to that. >> this morning about the line bump in the road is not that it's minimizing the arab spring but it

look, barack obama hasn't debated in four years. mitt romney has had a lot of debates in that time, but i do think it's worth noting, andrea, that all of mitt romney's debates have been against multiple people. there was never a time where he had a one on one debate against rick santorum or newt gingrich or rick perry. always debating four or five people who were really sort of aiming at him. he was the frontrunner throughout. barack obama had four debates against hillary clinton, one on one in the 2008 democratic primary, then three debates against john mccain. it's a different dynamic than to be the frontrunner where four or five people are aiming at you throughout a debate. >> here we are on the eve practically of the first debate and it's supposed to be an economic, domestic policy. >> right. >> and now foreign policy has reared its head. we have first of all mitt romney and "the wall street journal" an op-ed, saying that these developments are not as president obama says, mere bumps in the road. they are major issues that put o
